God is Good - all the time

“God is good” is more than mere theological words. Understanding this truth will change your worldview - it will dramatically expand your reality and help you make sense of a world filled with good and evil.
We are shaped by our conceptions of God. This is true whether we believe in God or not. Thankfully, the Bible tells us that “God is good” which is very good news indeed!
Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him”
Psalm 100:5 “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations”
Nahum 1:7 “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble”.
Because God is good, He created us “in His own image” with a freewill so we could enjoy a relationship of love with Him and share the joys of His perfect creation.
Because God is good, He governs the universe by love not control or coercion. Love is impossible without free will. God will not force us to love Him, worship Him, or obey His laws of love. The fact that sin, evil and pain exists is evidence that our freewill went bad.
Because God is good, from the very beginning, even before sin entered the world, He had a plan to save us and restore us. He would not abandon us in our sin. He would love us above Himself and pursue us at any cost to Himself.
Because God is good, He gave us His Son, His word, and His Ten Commandment law that reveals love in action. The law reveals God's character, our fallen condition and our need for Jesus our Savior.
Now let's answer a few questions…
- So, how do we know God is good?
- God shows us love and mercy even though we don’t deserve it. Why should a perfect, holy God care for us? He tells us He loves us and wants a relationship with us. Our sin separates us from him, so he wants to save us from the sin that separates us from him.
- God is good because it is His very nature and character - who He is. He doesn’t change. His goodness is constant. He is true, right, and good. His plans are ultimately for our benefit and aligned with His character.
- Even before we sinned, God had a plan to redeem us. Jesus would be our redemption and righteousness by living our perfect human life and dying for our sin so we could have everlasting life in Him.
- God’s goodness is apparent with every flower, petals and blade of grass. All things in nature testify to his care and love.
- Currently we live in a world infected by sin, sickness, death, pain and disappointments; but God promises to walk with us through it all and even redeem us from this fallen world. Our walk with Him will lead us over mountains high and through valleys low.
- As we study the bible we see the depth of God’s goodness and find hope and freedom in Jesus.
- Why does a good God allow suffering?
Have you ever wondered why an all-good all-powerful God allows evil and suffering in this world?
- All pain and suffering is a result of sin that entered the world.
- This was not part of God's plan for his perfect creation, but he allows us to experience pain to deepen our understanding that we need a savior.
- God can use our pain by making us into empathetic witnesses.
- Pain is often part of our growing to become like Christ. Jesus himself experienced pain. The Bible says Jesus was made perfect through pain.
- Jesus didn’t have to leave his throne of glory to die on the cross. He chose to suffer sorrow, hardship and death to save us. He shares in our suffering.
- God is more loving than we could ever imagine and hope for. In His love and mercy, He seeks us out to save us from the evil in this world and from the evil in ourselves.
- The struggle with evil and suffering in this fallen world is only temporary. Jesus already won the battle in the war. He is victorious over evil and even death.
- The Bible reveals a God Who is worthy of our trust even in the midst of our pain.
- How does God show us His Goodness?
- Did you wake up today with breath in your lungs?
- Did God allow His Son to die on the cross?
- Is God still good if you lose your job or the doctor says you have cancer? God’s goodness is present throughout our joys and trials. His holy spirit is with us, growing us and sanctifying us throughout our lives encouraging us to trust him so he can sanctify us abundantly until eternity, rewarding us for our faithfulness.
