Here I am.. send me

Bible Study: "Fishers of Men" t-shirt

Matthew 4:18-20:As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

Meeting Jesus and His First Followers

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the son of God, during this time He is beginning His ministry to tell people about the kingdom of God. This was the first time he began gathering followers.

Who were Simon Peter and Andrew? Explain that they were brothers and fishermen by profession, which was a common trade in Galilee.

What does it mean when Jesus says, “I will send you out to fish for people”? Discuss the metaphor of fishing in relation to reaching out to people and sharing Jesus’ teachings.

Activity: Personal Reflection - Think about a time when someone guided you during a difficult task. How did their guidance change the outcome?

The Call to Follow

  • Discussion Points:
    • Why do you think Peter and Andrew left everything immediately to follow Jesus? Discuss the significance of their immediate decision.
    • What might "leaving their nets" symbolize in today’s context? Consider what personal 'nets' (distractions, commitments, etc.) we might need to set aside to explore new opportunities or changes in life.
  • Activity: Interactive Quiz - A few simple questions to recap who Jesus, Peter, and Andrew were and why their interaction is significant.

Becoming 'Fishers of Men'

  • Discussion Points:
    • Explore the concept of being a 'fisher of men' in terms of sharing knowledge and helping others.
    • How can this story apply to our lives today? Discuss practical ways to support and guide others, even if it’s not about religious faith.
  • Activity: Group Discussion - Share a moment when you helped someone learn something new or when someone helped you. How did it feel? What was the impact?

Taking the Next Steps

  • Discussion Points:
    • Consider how being open to new ideas or changes can lead to personal growth and new opportunities.
    • Discuss the value of mentorship and support in any learning or growth process.
  • Activity: Action Plan - Encourage participants to think about a new skill or hobby they want to pursue or a way they can help someone else in the coming week. Make a small, achievable plan.

Conclusion

  • Summary: Review the key points discussed about mentorship, support, and openness to new paths.
  • Closing Thoughts: Encourage ongoing curiosity and openness to learning more about the people around them and their stories.
  • Closing Prayer: If appropriate, a simple, non-denominational prayer or a moment of reflection for peace and wisdom moving forward.
